Austrian National Library

The Austrian National Library is the home of one of the most important collections of manuscripts and rare prints in the world. Founded as the Habsburg court library in Vienna in the 16th century, it today houses various collections and museums ranging from papyri to modern Austrian literature.

The oldest surviving library catalogue, dated to 1576, already mentions Oriental manuscripts. In the early 17th century, their number increased thanks to the efforts of Sebastian Tengnagel (1603-1636), the library’s second prefect. He was a scholar of Oriental languages as well as an avid book collector, who bequeathed his collection to the court library. In the 19th century and especially during Moritz Graf Dietrichstein’s time as library prefect (1826-1845) the Oriental the collection started to grow again. A large number of manuscripts was acquired from the famous orientalist Joseph Freiherr von Hammer-Purgstall. Other books found their way to Vienna through the hands of scholars and explorers like Eduard Glaser, who brought back 250 manuscripts from his expeditions to South Arabia (mainly modern day Yemen). Finally, in 2011, Franz and Edelgard Loibl donated their collection of manuscripts and prints, among them many oriental manuscripts, to the Austrian National Library.
