On the occasion of the ten years celebration MWNF has signed agreements with different Spanish institutions to promote the Discover Islamic Art Virtual Museum as an educational tool and to develop new forms of cultural tourism based on the Islamic Art in the Mediterranean Exhibition Trails. The launch of the MWNF portal is one of the activities taking place under these agreements. The celebration's opening event was held on 11 December 2008 at Casa Árabe in Madrid, with the presentation of the results of ten years of successful partnership coordinated by MWNF. The panel was chaired by the director of Casa Árabe, Gema Martín Muñoz, and included representatives of the three Spanish ministries that contributed to the celebration programme: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education. In cooperation with Casa Árabe and the Educational Department of the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, a partner in the MWNF network since 1998, two workshops were organised in Madrid and Cordoba to familiarise teachers and museum staff with the educational potential of the Discover Islamic Art Virtual Museum. Thanks to the support of the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID) a series of activities could also be carried out in Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia. The ten years celebration closes a phase of MWNF that started in the context of the Barcelona Declaration and with the consistent support of the European Union, which made it possible to set up an infrastructure that otherwise could not have been realised. The great challenge that faces MWNF in the future is to ensure sustainability by integrating this infrastructure into the market to meet the demands and interests of audiences worldwide.
