Aicha BENABED Dr Aicha Ben Abed, Tunis, Tunisia, studied at the University of Aix-en-Provence and thew University of Paris-Sorbonne, located in France, where she obtained her PhD and HDR (Habilitation to Direct Research), respectively. She has served as Director of Sites and Monuments for the Institut National du Patrimoine,, Tunisia (INP, Tunisia’s National Heritage Institute), Director of the Bardo Museum, Director of the Tunisian-French project of Conservation and Valorisation for the site of Dougga, and director and co-director of five major excavations. She curated several international exhibitionsin Tunisia, the United States, France, Italy and Spain, promoting better knowledge and understanding of Tunisia’s cultural heritage. Aicha Ben Abed’s authored (or co-authored) six volumes of The Corpus of Tunisian Mosaics, as well as several books and articles on architecture, mosaics and funerary archaeology in Tunisia. She has helped establish the collaboration between INP and the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) regarding the training of technicians carrying out the in situ mosaic conservation technique. Since 2008 Aicha Ben Abed acts as the international coordinator of the Getty Conservation Institute’s project MOSAIKON, promoting the conservation of mosaics within the Mediterranean region.
