Description:

This book cover fragment is striking for its contrast in brown and gold, also for the balance of ornamentation. The deep-tooled central and corner motifs of the central field are formed of Chinese cloud and knot motifs, while the surrounding decorative borders form vine scroll motifs with the zigzag saz leaf. The horror vacui in the gold medallions is enhanced all the more for being surrounded by the emptiness of the non-ornamental spaces. The sweeping dynamism of the motifs corresponds to the decoration in book illumination and textile art, and in architectural ceramics.
