Jug with depiction of animals
Hegira 10th century / AD second half 16th century
Height 16 cm
The shape of this jug with handles ending in dragon heads comes from Timurid Iran. On the body of the jug and amidst Ottoman decoration hunting scenes are depicted with fantastic and real animals. On the neck paradisiac scenes: two naked figures under a tree, a bear holding a musical instrument and peaceful animals. This animal style originates in German Renaissance silver and was adapted into the repertory of the Balkan Christian workshops before passing into the Iznik ceramics.
