Section of a piece of furniture
Hegira 3rd century / AD late 9th century
Woodwork, furniture, wood
Wood, carved and incised
97 cm X 50 cm
The section was probably part of a sarir, a large chair or throne. It bears a benedictory kufic inscription: “blessing and good fortune and happiness and felicity to its owner”. The decorative band is carved in the bevelled style, typical of the ninth century, with a symmetrical composition of a central stylized lotus and fan-shaped palmettes. A number of comparable wood sections in museum collections share similar compositions and inscriptions.
