Description:

This illustration, from around 1860 in a local Oran publication in the west of Algeria, L’Algérie Comique et Pittoresque, comments on current affairs with a distinctively Mediterranean style and sense of humour. Salomon Assus, the father of the famous painter from the Algerian school Armand Assus, was one of the newspaper's first cartoonists.
