Hegira 3rd century / AD 9th century
Iraq or Iran
This gold amulet case is inscribed on both sides with verses from the Qur’an in an early kufic script. The magical-religious properties of amulets are accepted in the Islamic world and are reinforced by the use of verses from the Qur’an. In this case verses are from chapter CXII entitled ‘Sincerity’ extolling God’s purity and devotion to the one God.
